The spread of Zika didn’t justify canceling a global event because the virus was already circulating widely and travel to affected regions was not unique to the Olympics. Traveling athletes and spectators could take precautions, and the incremental risk posed by the Games was small compared with everyday global movement. A measured public health response, not panic, was the more effective way to balance safety with international cooperation.
